Blue World by John Coltrane, a cd of previously unreleased music was released on Impulse! Records on September 27, 2019. The original composition Blue World had earlier been released on August 16, 2019. Originally commissioned by Canadian film director Gilles Groulx for the film, Le chat dans le sac, on June 24, 1964 Coltrane took McCoy Tyner, Elvin Jones and Jimmy Garrison into Van Gelder studios and laid down the tracks. Only 37 minutes in length, Groulx used only 10 minutes of the recordings in the film which quickly faded into cinematic obscurity. The recordings had been stored away until the early 21st century when an archivist from the National Film Board of Canada was tasked with assembling Groulx's work and brought the music to light. Subsequent negotiations with Impulse! for the music's release proved successful. This cd comes after the successful 2018 release of Trane's Both Directions at Once: The Lost Album, also from Impulse!
